  THE INDIAN SILK EXPORT PROMOTION COUNCIL

The Indian Silk Export Promotion Council (ISEPC) was established by the Government of India on 17th June, 1983 with the prime object of promoting and regulating the exports of natural silk goods and to promote India ' s image as a reliable supplier of high quality silk goods like fabrics, made-ups, readymade garments and machine made carpets. Today 2000 firms are members of the ISEPC and US $ 500 millions worth of silk goods are exported annually to more than 100 countries. The ISEPC is playing an important role in bringing out this transformation. The Council is sponsored by the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India.

Some of the prominent functions of the Council are as follows :

  1. To chalk out strategies to promote, identify and develop markets of export potentials.
  2. Provide market intelligence, statistical data and conduct market surveys.
  3. Introduce the overseas buyer to the right manufacturers.

  4. To participate in the International Trade Fairs and sending delegations to countries of export potential.

  5. To carry out extensive publicity abroad in foreign magazines/ periodicals etc.

  6. To assist the buyer and seller for collaborations and joint ventures.

  7. To provide fashion library facilities to its members and also to invite fashion designers from abroad to assist local weavers.

  8. Attend to buyers complaints and in case of trade dispute, assist to bring about amicable settlement.

  9. To advise its members on Import-Export Policy and procedure and also to resolve their problems.

  10. Maintain liaison with various Government departments to convey the requirements of the industry and help to bring about appropriate policy changes.

  11. To collect, classify and circulate statistics and other information regarding silk trade amongst the industry.
Silknet :- For the purpose of keeping abreast of the various developments in the silk trade both international and domestic, the Council publishes a bulletin called the SILKNET which is distributed free of cost to its members.

In short ISEPC is committed to stimulating growth both in quality and quantity of silk exports. Towards this end Council offers to its member exporters technical assistance, advice and information.

SILK EXPORTS 2004 - 2005

Exports of silk products during the year 2004-05 reached Rs. 2747 crore. For a fibre which has a share of less than 0.2 % production in the total fibre production, and a total production value of about Rs.10500 crore this is a commendable achievement. The silk exports have every reason to be proud of, for contributing about 0.8% of the total exports of all products from India .
