EXPORTS
The Ministry of Textiles has anticipated that the value of silk export earnings will reach around 900 million US$ (Rs. 3770 crore) during the year 2007-08. The export of 157.28 million US$ ( Rs. 648.45 crore) has been achieved during April-June period of the year 2007-08, which is 17.5% achievement of the target in dollar terms (17.2% in rupee terms) as compared to corresponding period of the year 2006-07 which was 162.02 million US $ (Rs. 736.69 crore). The data about the status of silk export earnings during April-June period of the year 2007-08 compared to the corresponding period of the year 2006-07 is given in Table 1.

COUNTRYWISE SILK EXPORTS
U.S.A., U.K., Honduras, U.A.E. and Spain are the top five countries importing Indian silk goods (in value terms) during April-June period of the year 2007-08 and accounted for 23.4%, 11.8%, 8.2%, 7.9% and 5.6%, respectively of total export earnings. They altogether accounted for 89.51 million US $ (Rs. 369.05 crore) which was 56.9% of total export earnings of 157.28 million US$ (Rs. 648.45 crore) during the period. The countrywise silk export earnings during the April to June period of the year 2007-08 along with the data of corresponding period of the year 2006-07 are shown in Table II.

ITEMWISE ANALYSIS
(I) Natural Silk Yarn, Fabrics, made-up etc : Natural Silk Yarn, Fabrics, made-ups etc. account for 63.2% approximately to the total silk goods exports. During April -June period of the year 2007-08, exports of these items touched 99.37 million US$ (Rs. 409.69 crore) showing a decrease of 4.8% in dollar terms (13.7% in rupee terms) as compared to corresponding period of the year 2006-07 i.e., 104.35 million US$ (Rs. 474.50 crore). The major importing countries were U.S.A., U.K., Honduras, Italy, German P. Rep.,UAE, Spain, Hong kong, France, and Singapore.
II) Readymade garments: Readymade garments account for 34.7% approximately to the total silk goods exports. They are also high value-added items. Readymade garments recorded an export earning of 54.64 million US$ (Rs. 255.29 crore) during April-June period of the year 2007-08, showing an increase of 3.8% in dollar terms (5.9% decrease in rupee terms), when compared to the corresponding period of the year 2006-07 which was 52.65 million US$ (Rs. 239.41 crore). The major importing countries were U.S.A., U.K., U.A.E., Italy, Spain, Japan, France, Saudi Arabia, German P. Rep. and Denmark.
III) Silk Carpets: Silk carpets accounted for 1.6% approximately to the total silk goods exports. This segment recorded export earnings of 2.51 million US$ (Rs 10.36 crore) during April-June period of the year 2007-08, showing a decrease of 37.6% in dollar terms (43.4% in rupee terms), when compared to the corresponding period of the year 2006-07 which was 4.02 million US$ (Rs. 18.30 crore). The major importing countries are U.S.A., Japan, German P. Rep., Italy, Canada, U.A.E., France, Spain, Turkey and South Africa.
IV) Silk waste: Silkwaste, which is the raw material for the spun silk industry is also exported. This segment recorded export earnings of 0.75 million US$ (Rs. 3.11 crore) during April-June period of the year 2007-08, showing an decrease of 23.4% in dollar terms (30.6% in rupee terms) when compared to the corresponding period of the year 2006- 07 which was 0.99 million US$ (4.48 crore). The major importing countries were Thailand, China P. Republic and Hong Kong. Export of silk waste During April-June period of the year 2007-08 as compared to the corresponding period of the year 2006-07 are shown in Table -III

It is observed from data shown in Table-IV that, West Europe (37.7%) and U.S.A. & others (34.2%) appeared to be prominent regions for Indian silk export followed by Asian Countries (21.5%) and others (6.6%) during April to June period of the year 2007-08.
PORTWISE EXPORTS
Export earnings through the six major ports viz., Bangalore, Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, Mumbai and Nhava Sheva Sea is accounted to 130.83 million US$ (Rs. 539.40 crore) [83.2%] against the total export earnings of 157.28 million US$ (Rs. 648.45 crore) during April-June period of the year 2007-08, as compared to 141.69 million US$ (Rs. 644.27 crore) [87.5%] against the total export earnings of 162.02 million US$ (Rs.736.69 crore) during the corresponding period of the year 2006-07.
IMPORTS
The import of raw silk during April to June period of the year 2007-08 showed an increase (i.e, 1129 MT more) as compared to the corresponding period of the year 2006-07. Data on import of raw silk, silk yarn & fabrics during June 2007and April to June period of the year 2007-08 along with corresponding data of 2006-07 is given in Table-V.

It could be seen that 2082 MT (98.2%) of raw silk, out of 2121 MT imported during period April-June of the year 2007-08, was imported from China P. Republic only. Value of imported raw silk including silk yarn and fabrics during the period April- June of the year 2007-08 was 99.23 million US$ (Rs. 409.13 crore) as compared to 73.48 million US$ (Rs. 334.10 crore) during the corresponding period of the year 2006-07,indicating an increase of 35.1% in dollar terms (22.5% in rupee terms)
Countrywise quantum of import of raw silk for the period April-June of the year 2007-08 as compared to the corresponding period of the year 2006-07 is given in Table VI.
SHARE OF SILK GOODS EXPORTS IN OVERALL TEXTILE AND TOTAL EXPORTS
The Share of silk goods export in the overall textile exports and total exports of the country during June 2007 and April- June period of the year 2007-08 along with corresponding data of the year 2006- 07 is given in Table VII
From Table - VII, it can be inferred that the percentage share of silk goods export earnings during April to June period of the year 2007-08, in the total textile export earnigs of the country was 3.92% as compared to 3.47% during the corresponding period of the year 2006- 07, showing an increasing trend of 13.0%. Besides, the silk good share in the total export earnings is around 0.45% in the April to June period of the year 2007-08.
SHARE OF SILK GOODS IMPORTS AS COMPARED TO TEXTILE AND TOTAL IMPORTS
Value of silk goods imports as compared to and total imports during June 2007 and April to June period of the year 2007-08 along with data of the year 2006-07 is give in Table No VIII.
It could be seen from Table No VIII that during April to June period of the year 2007-08, the share of imports of silk goods in total textiles import was 12.76% as compared to 9.97% during corresponding period of year 2006- 07, showing an increase of 28.0%. Besides, the share of silk goods in the total imports is around 0.18% during April-June period of the year 2007-08
