EXPORTS
The Ministry of Textiles has anticipated that the value of silk export earnings will reach around 900 million US$ (Rs. 3770 crore) during the year 2007-08. The export of 60.66 million US$ (Rs. 255.68 crore) has been achieved during April month of the year 2007-08, which is 6.7% achievement of the target in dollar terms (6.8% in rupee terms) as compared to corresponding month of the year 2006-07 which was 51.32 million US $ (Rs. 230.69 crore). The data about the status of silk export earnings during April month of
the year 2007-08 compared to the corresponding month of the year 2006-07 is given in Table 1.

COUNTRYWISE SILK EXPORTS
U.S.A., U.K., Honduras, U.A.E. and German P. Republic are the top five countries importing Indian silk goods (in value terms) during April month of the year 2007-08 and accounted for 24.6%, 9.6%, 7.7% and 4.7%, respectively of total export earnings. They altogether accounted for 35.7 million US $ (Rs.150.49 crore) which was 58.9% of total export earnings of 60.66 million US$ (Rs.255.68 crore) during the month. The countrywise silk export earnings during the April month of the year 2007-08 along with the data of corresponding period of the year 2006-07 are shown in Table II.

ITEMWISE ANALYSIS
(I) Natural Silk Yarn, Fabrics, made-up etc.: Natural Silk Yarn, Fabrics, made-ups etc. account for 54.5% approximately to the total silk goods exports. During April month of the year 2007-08, exports of
these items touched 33.03 million US$ (Rs. 139.23 crore) showing a increase of 1.3% in dollar terms and a decrease of 5.0% in rupee terms, as compared to corresponding month of the year 2006-07 i.e., 32.61 million US$ (Rs. 146.56 crore). The major importing countries were U.S.A., U.K., Honduras, Italy, German P. Rep.,UAE, Spain, Hong kong, France, and Greece.
II) Readymade garments: Readymade garments account for 43.7% approximately to the total silk goods exports. They too are also high valueadded items. Readymade garments recorded an export earning of 26.49 million US$ (Rs. 111.66 crore) during April month of the year 2007-08, showing a significant increase of 58.0% in dollar terms (48.1% in rupee terms), when compared to the corresponding month of the year 2006-07 which was 16.77 million US$ (Rs. 75.37 crore). The major importing countries were U.S.A., U.K., U.A.E., Italy, Japan, France, Saudi Arabia, German P. Rep. and Denmark.
III) Silk Carpets: Silk carpets approximately accounted for 1.2% to the total silk goods exports. This segment recorded export earnings of 0.73 million US$ (Rs 3.09 crore) during April month the year 2007-08, showing a high decrease of 55.9% in dollar terms (52.9% in rupee terms), when compared to the corresponding month of the year 2006-07 which was 1.56 million US$ (Rs. 7.00 crore). The major importing countries are U.S.A., Japan,German P. Rep., Italy, Mauritious, Canada, U.A.E., Portugal, Spain and Australia.
(IV) Silk waste: Silk waste which is the raw material for the spun silk industry, is also exported in small quantity. During month of April of the year 2007-08, export earnings of silkwaste was 0.40 million US$
(1.70 crore) Showing an increase of 3.0% in dollar terms and a decrease of 3.4% in rupee terms as compared to the corresponding month of the year 2006-07 which was 0.38 million US$ (1.76 crore).

It is observed from data shown in Table-IV that, West Europe (34.5%) and U.S.A. & others (37.0%) appeared to be prominent regions for Indian silk export followed by Asian Countries (21.0%) and others (7.5%) during April month of the year 2007-08
PORT-WISE EXPORTS
Export earnings through the six major ports viz., Bangalore, Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, Mumbai and Nhava Sheva Sea is accounted to 49.70 million US$ (Rs. 209.50crore) [81.9%] against the total export earnings of 60.66 million US$ (Rs. 255.68 crore) during April month of the year 2007-08.As compared to the corresponding month of the year 2006- 07,which was 45.08 million US$ (Rs. 202.65 crore) [87.8%] against the total export earnings of 51.32 million US$ (Rs.230.69 crore).
IMPORTS
The import of raw silk during April month of the year 2007-08 showed an increase of 49.2% (i.e. 147 MT) as compared to the corresponding month of the year 2006-07. Data on import of raw silk, silk yarn & fabrics during the month of April of year 2007-08 alongwith corresponding month of 2006-07 is given in Table-V.

It could be seen that out of 446 MT imported during April month of the year 2007-08, 427 MT (95.7%) was imported from China P. Republic only. Value of imported raw silk including silk yarn and fabrics during the April month of the year 2007-08 was 24.60 million US$ (Rs. 103.70 crore) as compared to 20.82 million US$ (Rs. 93.59 crore) during the corresponding month of the year 2006- 07,indicating an increase of 18.2% in dollar terms (10.8% in rupee terms)
Quantum of countrywise import of raw silk during April month of the year 2007- 08 as compared to the corresponding month of the year 2006-07 is given in Table VI.
