SILK EXPORT & IMPORT REVIEW

     

EXPORTS

 The Ministry of Textiles has anticipated that the value of silk export earnings will reach around 900 million US$ (Rs. 3770 crore) during the year 2007-08. The export of 390.49 million US$ (Rs. 1588.92 crore) has been achieved during April-October period of the year 2007-08, which is 43.4% achievement of the target in dollar terms (42.1% in rupee terms) as compared to corresponding period of the year 2006-07 which was 409.38 million US $ (Rs. 1877.43 crore). The data about the status of silk export earnings during April-October period of the year 2007-08 compared to the
corresponding period of the year 2006-07 is given in Table 1.

COUNTRYWISE SILK EXPORTS

 U.S.A., U.K., U.A.E., Honduras and Italy are the top five countries importing Indian silk goods (in value terms) during April-October period of the year 2007-08 and accounted for 21.4%, 13.9%,
9.9%, 6.6% and 5.1%, respectively of total export earnings. They altogether accounted for 222.50 million US$ (Rs. 905.30 crore) which was 57.0% of total export earnings of 390.49 million US$ (Rs.1588.92 crore) during the period. The country-wise silk export earnings during the April to October period of the year 2007-08 alongwith the data of corresponding period of the year 2006-07
are shown in Table II.

ITEMWISE ANALYSIS

 (I) Natural Silk Yarn, Fabrics, made-up etc : I) Natural Silk Yarn, Fabrics, madeup etc.: Natural Silk Yarn, Fabrics, made-ups etc. accounted for 55.2% approximately to the total silk goods exports. During April-October period of the year 2007-08, exports of these items touched 215.51 million US$ (Rs. 876.90 crore) showing a decrease of 14.4% in dollar terms (24.0% in rupee terms) as compared to corresponding period of the year 2006-07 i.e., 251.73 million US$ (Rs. 1154.44 crore). The major importing countries were U.S.A., U.K., Honduras, Italy, German P. Rep., UAE, Spain, Hong Kong, France, and Singapore.

II) Readymade garments:  Readymade garments account for 42.9% approximately to the total silk goods exports. They are also high value-added items. Ready-made garments recorded an export earning of 167.52 million US$ (Rs. 681.63 crore) during April-October period of the year 2007-08, showing an increase of 19.1% in dollar terms (5.7% in rupee terms), when compared to the corresponding period of the year 2006-07 which was 140.68 million US$ (Rs. 645.15 crore). The major importing countries were U.S.A., U.K., U.A.E., Italy, Spain, France, Saudi Arabia, German P. Rep., Tanzania Republic and Denmark.

III) Silk Carpets:  Silk carpets accounted for 1.5% approximately to the total silk goods exports. This segment recorded export earnings of 5.77 million US$ (Rs 23.46 crore) during April-October period of the year 2007-08, showing a decrease of 59% in dollar terms (63.6% in rupee terms), when compared to the corresponding period of the year 2006-07 which was 14.06 million US$ (Rs. 64.47 crore). The major importing countries were U.S.A., German P. Rep., U.A.E.,U.K. France, Greece, Canada, Denmark, Turkey and Italy.

IV) Silk waste:  Silkwaste, which is the raw material for the spun silk industry is also exported. This segment recorded export earnings of 1.70 million US$ (Rs. 6.93 crore) during April-October period of the year 2007-08, showing a decrease of 41.8% in dollar terms (48.2% in rupee terms) when compared to the corresponding period of the year 2006-07 which was 2.92 million US$ (Rs 13.37 crore). The major importing countries were Thailand, China P. Republic, Bangladesh and Hong Kong. Export of silk waste during April-October period of the year 2007-08 as compared to the corresponding period of the year 2006-07 are shown in Table -III.

Region-wise silk export performance during the month of October 2007 and April - October period of year 2007-08 along with the corresponding data of the year 2006-07 are shown in Table IV.

It is observed from data shown in Table IV that, West Europe (38.3%) and U.S.A. & others (30.8%) appeared to be prominent regions for Indian silk export followed by Asian Countries (23.4%) and others (7.5%) during April to October
period of the year 2007-08.

PORTWISE EXPORTS

Export earnings through the six major ports viz., Bangalore, Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, Mumbai and Nhava Sheva Sea is accounted to 333.05 million US$ (Rs. 1355.20 crore) [85.29%] against the total export earnings of 390.49 million US$ (Rs. 1588.92 crore) during April-October period of the year 2007-08, as compared to corresponding period of the year 2006-07 it was 352.13 million US$ (Rs. 1614.87 crore) [86.01%] against the total export earnings of 409.38 million US$ (Rs.1877.43 crore).

IMPORTS

 The import of raw silk during April to October period of the year 2007-08 increased by 59.9% (i.e., 1866 MT more) as compared to the corresponding period of the year 2006-07. Data on import of raw silk, silk yarn & fabrics during October 2007 and April to October period of the year 2007-08 along with corresponding data of 2006-07 is given in Table-V.

It is seen that 4918 MT (98.8%) of raw silk, out of 4980 MT imported during period April-October of the year 2007- 08, was imported from China P. Republic only. Value of imported raw silk including silk yarn and fabrics during the period April-October of the year 2007-08 was 245.73 million US$ (Rs. 999.86 crore) as compared to 210.21 million US$ (Rs. 964.04 crore) during the corresponding period of the year 2006-07, indicating an increase of 16.9% in dollar terms (3.7% in rupee terms).

Country-wise quantum of import of raw silk for April-October period of the year 2007-08 as compared to the corresponding period of the year 2006-07 is given in Table VI.

SHARE OF SILK GOODS EXPORTS IN OVERALL TEXTILE AND TOTAL EXPORTS
The Share of silk goods export in the overall textile exports and total exports of the country during October 2007 and April-October period of the year 2007-08 along with corresponding data of the year 2006-07 is given in Table VII.

From Table - VII, it can be inferred that the percentage share of silk goods export earnings during April to October period of the year 2007-08, in the total textile export earnings of the country was 3.66% as compared to 3.89% during the corresponding period of the year 2006-07, showing a decrease of 5.9%. Besides, the silk goods share in the total export earnings is around 0.47% in the April to October period of the year 2007-08.

SHARE OF SILK GOODS IMPORTS AS COMPARED TO TEXTILE AND TOTAL IMPORTS
VValue of silk goods imports as compared to textiles and total imports during October 2007 and April to October period of the year 2007-08 along with data of the year 2006-07 is give in Table No VIII.

It could be seen from Table No VIII that during April to October period of the year 2007-08, the share of imports of silk goods in total textiles import was 12.66% as compared to 12.21% during corresponding period of year 2006-07, showing an increase of 3.68%. Besides, the share of silk goods in the total imports is around 0.19% during April-October period of the year 2007-08.
