The Ministry of Textiles has anticipated that the value of silk export earnings will reach around 712 million US$ (Rs. 3200 crore) during the year 2006-07. The export of 717 million US$ (Rs. 3244.44 crore)
has been achieved during April-March
period of the year 2006-07, which is
100.7% achievement of the target in dollar
terms (101.4% in rupee terms) as compared to corresponding period of the year 2005-06 which was 721.53 million US $ (Rs. 3194.20 crore). The data about the status of silk export earnings during the period April to March of the year 2006-07 compared to the corresponding period of the year 2005-06 is given inTable 1.

COUNTRYWISE SILK EXPORTS :- |

| |
U.S.A., U.K., Italy, U.A.E. and German
P. Republic are the top five countries
importing Indian silk goods (in value
terms) during April to February period of
the year 2006-07 and accounted for
25.6%, 10.9%, 6.8%, 6.5% and 6.1%,
respectively of the total export arnings.
They altogether accounted for 369.67
million US $ (Rs. 1676.81 crore) which
was 55.9% of total export earnings of
660.98 million US$ (Rs. 2998.22 crore)
during the period. The countrywise silk
export earnings during the April-February
period of the year 2006-07 along with the
data of corresponding period of the year
2005-06 are shown in Table II. |

ITEMWISE ANALYSIS |

| |
(I) Natural Silk Yarn,
Fabric, Made-ups etc.:Natural Silk Yarn, Fabrics, madeups
etc. account for 59.6% approximately
to the total silk goods exports. During
April to March period of the year 2006-
07, exports of these items touched 427.30
million US$ (Rs. 1933.52 crore) showing
a decrease of 15.1% in dollar terms and an
increase of 13.32% in rupee terms, as
compared to corresponding period of the
year 2005-06 i.e., 503.47 million US$
(Rs. 2228.88 crore). The major importing
countries were U.S.A., U.K., Italy, German
P. Republic, Spain, Honduras, U.A.E.,
France, Canada and Hong Kong. |

(II) Ready-made Garments:Readymade
garments account for 35.9%
approximately to the total silk goods
exports. They are also high value-added
items. Readymade garments recorded an
export earnings of 257.42 million US$
(Rs. 1164.81 crore) during April to
March period of the year 2006-07,
showing an increase of 35.3% in dollar
terms (38.3% in rupee terms), when
compared to the corresponding period of the year 2005-06 which was 190.21
million US$ (Rs. 842.06 crore). Themajor importing countries were U.S.A., U.K., U.A.E., Italy, Spain,France, Saudi Arabia, German P. Rep.,Denmark and Singapore. |

(III) Silk Carpets:Silk carpets
approximately accounted for 3.8% to the
total silk goods exports. This segment
recorded export earnings of 27.41 million
US$ (Rs 124.01 crore) during April to
March period the year 2006-07,
showing a decrease of 17.4% in dollar
terms (20.0% in rupee terms), when
compared to the corresponding period of
the year 2005-06 which was 23.35 million
US$ (Rs. 103.36 crore). The major
importing countries are U.S.A., Malaysia, Hong Kong, German P. Rep., U.K., Mali, Netherlands, Saudi Arabia, U.A.E., and Australia. |

(IV) Silk-waste:Silk waste which is the
raw material for the spun silk industry, is
also exported. During April to March
period of the year 2006-07, it showed an
increasing trend when compared to the
corresponding period of the year 2005-06
Export of silkwaste during April to

compared to the corresponding period of
the year 2005-06 are shown in the
Table-III.

It is observed from data shown in Table-IV, West Europe (39.2%) and U.S.A. & others (35.2%) appeared to be the prominent regions for Indian silk export followed by Asian Countries (19.3%) and others (6.0%) during April to March period of the year 2006-07.

PORT-WISE EXPORTS |

Export earnings through the six major
ports viz., Bangalore, Delhi, Kolkata,
Chennai, Mumbai and Nhava Sheva Sea
is accounted to 603.09 million US$ (Rs.
2729.00 crore) [84.1%] against the total
export earnings of 717.00 million US$
(Rs. 3244.44 crore) during April to
February period of the year 2006-07.
During the corresponding period of the
year 2005-06, it was 634.39 million US$(Rs. 2808.43 crore) [87.9%] against the
total export earnings of 721.53 million
US$ (Rs. 3194.20 crore).

IMPORTS |

The import of raw silk during April to
March period of the year 2006-07 was decrease by 33.6% (i.e. 2816 MT) as
compared to the corresponding period of the
year 2005-06. Data on import of raw silk,
silk yarn & fabrics during the month
March 2007 and April to March
period of the year 2006-07 alongwith
corresponding data of 2005-06 is given in
Table-V. |

It is seen that out of 5567 MT during
April to March period of the year 2006-
07 5320 MT(95.6%) of raw silk , was imported from China P. Republic
only. Value of import of raw silk including
silk yarn and fabrics during the preiod
April to March period of the year 2006-
07 was 347.81million US$ (Rs. 2573.86
crore) compared to 401.19 million US$
(Rs. 1776.08 crore)during the same period
of the year 2005-06, indicating a decrease
of 13.30% in dollar terms (11.39% in rupee
terms)
Quantum of countrywise import of raw
silk during April to March period of the
year 2006-07 as compared to the
corresponding period of the year 2005-06
is given in Table VI.
