SILK
EXPORTS AND IMPORTS REVIEW APRIL 2004 |
|
| |
|
|
| |
EXPORTS DURING
2004-05 |
|
 |
About 30%
of Indian out put of all types of silk goods is exported,
though India has a large domestic market for silk products
within the country itself.
|
 |
| |
|
|
| |
India's exports consist
exclusively of Dress Materials, Readymade garments, Sarees
and Made-up articles for interior decoration (e.g., Bed spreads,
Cushion covers, Curtains and Carpets etc.). Though India is
the second largest producer of raw silk in the World and biggest
importer of raw silk, it’s share in the global silk
export trade still continues to be fairly insignificant. However,
it does not mean that Indian silk products could not have
a higher market share in some specific product groups. The
demand for traditional Indian dupion silk fabrics has increased
in international market. The silk garment exports are increasing
significantly from 1999-2000 onwards. The value of silk garment
exports during the year 1999-2000 was 86.22 Mn. US$ (Rs. 373.73
crore) which has increased to 163.42 Mn. US$ (Rs. 751.07 crore)
during 2003-04, indicating an increase of 89.5 and 101% in
dollar and rupee terms, respectively.
|
|
| |
|
|
| |
Silk exports of the country
has satisfactorily progressed from the year 1999-2000 onwards.
In 1999-2000, the total value of silk export earnings was
around 405 Mn. US$ (Rs. 1755.55 crore). The provisional silk
export earnings during the year 2003-04 was around 560.60
Mn. US$ (Rs. 2576.52 crore) compared to the export earnings
of 474.08 Mn. US$ (Rs. 2294.05 crore) in the year 2002-03.
The growth rate of export earnings during the year 2003-04
over the year 2002-03 were 18.3% and 12.3% in dollar and rupee
terms respectively. |
|
| |
|
|
| |
India's export trade
is highly concentrated with 10 leading buyers around the world
viz., USA, U.K., Hong Kong, German P Rep, Italy, France, Spain,
Saudi Arabia, Singapore etc. The share of total Indian exports
by these countries is around 80%. |

REVIEW OF SILK IMPORTS |
|
| |
For the expansion of
exports of silk products from this Country, efforts are also
being made to increase domestic production of raw silk and
silk yarn since the current raw silk out put falls short of
demand. In order to satisfy the growing demand for silk and
in order to increase production of high quality silk goods
especially lighter weight clothing such as blouses, shirts,
dresses, sarees etc., which are meant for export by the leading
exporters of the Country who are entirely dependant on imports
for their raw material, Government of India has allowed imports
of Bivoltine raw silk and silk yarn in to the country.
Data on import of raw silk and silk yarn & fabrics during
April month of the year 2004-05 along with corresponding data
of the year 2003-04 is given in Table-V..
